Celebrations for Black History Month continue at the University of La Verne as the month of February comes to an end.

The African American Student Alliance, with support from several campus organizations, including the Institute for Multicultural Research and Campus Diversity, organized a number of events to celebrate African American heritage.

“Keisha Bentley, the traditional advisor for AASA is currently on leave of absence,” said Multicultural Affairs Director Daniel Loera, who is the temporary advisor for AASA.

Loera has been working closely with the AASA to help the events come through.

Some of the events that have taken place include the “Salute to the Black Man,” hosted by the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority on Feb. 13. Ten to 12 African American professors, leaders, and students were honored.

“It feels great to be honored for doing the right thing,” Loera said, who was honored for his work related to the Black Alumni Association.

Loera has been involved in the Black Alumni Association for three years.

On Feb. 20 Rev. Carlton Rickman of Brown Memorial African Methodist Episcopal Church led a Unity Service at Dailey Theatre.

“It is not really a church service, just an open forum for ideas about creating unity,” said Glennda Bivens, AASA vice-president.

During the service, ideas were shared about creating unity in ULV’s African American community and other cultures at the University.

The Young African American Summit will take place tomorrow.

It is an open forum where individuals can share experiences in various professions.

“It begins with a panel discussion and there will be a variety of different people with different backgrounds on the panel,” Bivens said.

After the event there will be an underground concert featuring Ankore, a hip hop group that opens up for other acts like Kanye West.

BMuse, an underground rap artist from ULV, will also be featured.

The Black History celebration will extend to the month of March with the Black Alumni Dinner and Black History Month awards on March 12.
