The lights were dim, the crowds were cheering and each Greek organization was ready to give its all in a lip sync competition to try and win the first place trophy.
La Verne’s annual Lip Sync was held last Friday in the Athletics Pavilion and each sorority and fraternity took their spots on the bleachers and belted out chants competing against one another on who could be louder.
“It’s exciting to be in this atmosphere, you can just feel the competitiveness and how much fun each Greek group is having,” said Alessa Galvan, a La Verne alumna.
The ladies of Alpha Omicron Pi started off the night with their performance that incorporated traveling around the world while adding comedic flavor by taking jokes from the popular movie “The Hangover.” The sorority “traveled” to countries such as Mexico and danced to the Mexican Hat Dance.
“This is my first lip sync and it was so much fun, we didn’t win first place but we’re still going to go celebrate,” said AOII member and junior criminology major Janine Brown.
The second act was Sigma Kappa who kicked off the performance with a breakup between a sorority sister and the Lip Sync trophy.
The theme was based on Sigma Kappa losing the lip sync last year to Phi Delta Theta after winning the previous three years. The theme compelled the judges and the sorority regained the trophy with a first place finish.
“We took the criticism from last year, worked on it, and sigma kappa really came about,” said sorority member Kristen Chapman.
Iota Delta danced to the idea of what a La Verne student is to do after graduation. They placed fourth in the competition but that did not keep them from winning Greek Organization of the year.
This honor is based on community service, campus participation, leadership, scholarship and brotherhood or sisterhood.
“I’m really excited about winning (Greek Organization of the Year) because I’m a senior and I feel like all our hard work and integrity paid off,” said senior Iota Delta member Marcie Baldridge.
One of Iota Delta’s members, Naime Laskar, was also honored as Greek Woman of the Year, adding another honor to Iota Delta’s success.
Phi Sigma Sigma jumped on stage dressed as jungle animals bringing the theme of Disney’s “The Lion King” to stage.
“We just like the movie and thought the idea was unique,” said sorority member Ann Marie Francis.
Phi Delta Theta was the last and only fraternity to compete and took third. They brought the theme of a student’s heartbreak.
“Lip Sync just shows me what I’m capable of doing and how hard work shows,” said senior Phi Delta Theta member Douglas Mendoza.
The Phi Delta Thetas placed second behind their main competitors, Sigma Kappa. Phi Delta Theta President Christopher Weedon was named Greek Man of the year.
“It’s a huge honor, it feels like all the work I’ve put in the last five years is appreciated and I couldn’t be happier,” Weedon said.
The Greek organizations all practiced for over a month and brought competitiveness to both the stage and the bleachers.
“Everybody did such a great job and I was really excited watching what everyone had to bring to the stage,” Baldridge said.
