The Learning Enhancement Center at The University of La Verne has numerous beneficial programs to assist students in various areas that can improve their academic success.
The LEC has an extensive high-tech computer lab, tutoring services, seminars and a provisional entry program to offer all students.
Among its many purposes, the LEC’s main focus is peer tutoring.
Tutoring is offered in every subject on campus and there are 25 student tutors.
The tutors must have a 3.0 or above and have received an A or B in the course in which they are tutoring.
Each tutor starts off at $7.29 an hour and may receive a raise after the first year.
Tutoring is available for anyone on campus.
“Students that come in for help are often honor students as well as students who are struggling,” said LEC Director Bailey Smith.
Students interested in being tutored must call for an appointment at least 24 hours in advance.
As finals approach, students need to call ahead and meet with a tutor, Smith said.
The center is also currently recruiting tutors and encourages students to come in and fill out an application.
Another extremely useful aspect of the center is the modern computer lab that has a full-time assistant.
Gary Hogle, information technology specialist, offers help in various areas including formatting, power point and supplemental instruction.
The LEC is also known for its informative workshops.
The workshops are offered once a month and focus on different areas.
The next workshop offered is Research Survival Skills, 3:30 to 5 p.m. April 18 in the Wilson Library.
Students may sign up in the LEC and offer their name and topic of their research paper. After they do that, the library will take that information and look up general information for the students.
The students will receive the material at the workshop along with a jump- start on their paper.
The LEC is also involved in is the Entry program.
This includes placement testing in math, English and foreign language for potential students. Placement testing is offered in the center by appointment only.
The LEC is a place for students to better their academics with many helping hands surrounding them.
“Our primary focus is on the students,” Hogle said. “We are here for the students.”
