La Verne proved to be the superior team last Saturday with the offense blasting two goals past Caltech, defeating the team 2-0.

The Leopards dominated the first half of play, scoring in the 11th and 13th minute of the game.

The Leopard defense remained strong throughout the match, earning the team a much-deserved shutout.

“We had a great first half and did what we had to do to score,” said Shayon Jalayer, head coach.

Senior forward Art Pico had eight shots on goal and he put the Leopards ahead after he scored the first goal of the game.

Two minutes later, Chet Jusakul came back and capitalized on a long throw-in assist from Lance Pico and scored the second goal of the game for the Leopards.

“Both Picos played very well,” said Jalayer.

ULV left the score at 2-0 for the remainder of the match.

“We should have finished more on our opportunities. When we come together as a team we play well,” said freshman forward, Matt Paulson.

La Verne had 28 shots on goal while Caltech had eight.

ULV goalkeeper Derek Ramirez had one save.

The Caltech goalkeeper had three saves.

Jalayer saw an improvement in the Caltech squad’s play but he said, “Our team got comfortable at 2-0 and lost rhythm because of it.”

“Our efficiency in their final third was not good, crosses were not in the box,” said Jalayer.

The Leopards will play at Redlands tomorrow at 11 a.m.

“We tend to play down to other team’s abilities, we can beat all of these teams. We have to control the tempo to be successful,” said freshman goalkeeper Clayton Ureno.

Jayaler is hopeful that his team will be successful.

“We just want to compete,” he said.
