Sixty University of La Verne students were inducted last Thursday night into one of the most prestigious national academic organizations with membership into the Alpha Chi National College Honors Society.
The award is only given to juniors and seniors who are enlisted in the top 10 percent of the student body as measured by grade point average. This band of students is the sixth Alpha Chi class to be inducted from La Verne. The first class from La Verne was inducted in May 1993.
According to Dr. Al Clark, ULV chapter co-sponsor of the organization, Alpha Chi was founded on Feb. 22, 1922, and dedicated to scholarship and academic achievement and character.
Chapter co-sponsor, Dr. Andrea Labinger, said, “The name of the society, Alpha Chi, is composed of the initial letters of the Greek words ‘Aletheia’ and ‘Charakter’ meaning truth and character.”
The organization has over 300 chapters in the United States and Puerto Rico.
“This is an honor for me to be apart of Alpha Chi and my family and I are very proud,” said junior chemistry major and inductee Joe Kyle.
The speaker of the ceremony, held in La Fetra Auditorium, was President Stephen Morgan. He congratulated the inductees in front of an audience consisting of faculty, family and friends. He congratulated them on “achieving academic distinction” and for “bringing richness to our [college] community.”
Senior inductee and Associated Student Federation (ASF) Forum President, Dan Lougheed, said “I have heard of Alpha Chi before, but was really not familiar with it until I received information about it with my invitation letter.”
Dr. Morgan also said that he believes the society of Alpha Chi is not as well known as it should be.
“This is definitely an honor to be acknowledged with such an outstanding group of students,” Lougheed said.
