The La Verne track and field teams were busy this spring break competing in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference multi-dual meet on Saturday in Whittier.
The men’s team finished third at the dual meet while the women’s team finished seventh.
“We did well, a lot of guys PR,” James Thorn said. “A lot of guys did different events and excelled in them.”
“We are a lot stronger than last year,” junior Seve Villarreal said. “Come conference, we have a good shot doing well against everyone.”
On the men’s side Thorn finished second in the high jump with a mark of 6-2 3/4. Freshman Marcus Fortugno placed third in the 400 meters with a time of 49.79.
Villarreal said he had his personal best times in the 100 and 200 meters with times of 11.27 seconds and 22.71 seconds, respectively.
“I didn’t feel like I ran to my full potential,” Villarreal said. “There’s a lot of room for improvement.”
On the women’s side, senior Antionette Borders took first in the shot put, throwing 40-7. Freshman Clarissa Holz took second in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 67.74. Holz also finished third in the triple jump.
Freshman Kristine Leonard said she also had personal best in her events.
“I did well,” Leonard said. “I PR in all my races.”
Several track and field members also competed in the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational on April 4.
La Verne got a strong showing from their men’s sides. Freshman Michael Anderson placed 12th in the 400 meters hurdles with a time of 55.97.
Both teams feel confident about their teams as they prepare for the SCIAC championships in one week.
“We need to push ourselves,” Leonard said. “We need to fix our injuries.”
Both teams will square off at the Concordia Invitational on Friday.
