Rideshare week promotes clean air

This week is Rideshare Week, an event designed to encourage faculty and staff members to share a ride to school and by doing so, promote clean air.

The event is coordinated by the University of La Verne Rideshare Office.

The Rideshare Office has sent out pledge cards to every department so those faculty members interested in the program can send in their pledges. The pledge states that they will try to find someone with whom to carpool.

Some faculty members say they have found it difficult over the years to find a colleague with a similar schedule.

“I think this is a great program and I have turned in my pledge card, but it is difficult to find someone who lives close and has a common schedule,” said Eric Bishop, director of academic advising and retention services for ULV.

Next week, ULV is required to do a survey, mandated by the state, to show whether the University is putting forth the effort to reduce the amount of cars traveling to the University. The state goal is to have 1.5 faculty members in each car.

For those taking part in Rideshare Week, there are incentives such as a certificate for one thousand dollars toward gas. ULV rideshare is offering many other prizes, including transit passes, portable stereos, bicycles and more.

“This is a win-win situation because ridesharing not only reduces the amount of emissions released into the air, but it opens spaces to park for campus and for local businesses,” said Janie Stahly, transportation coordinator for ULV Rideshare.

Currently, there are 70 faculty and staff members participating in the event. Those interested in the program may contact the ULV Rideshare Office at (909) 593-1749.
