Women’s soccer soars low against Eagles, losing 2-0

The look of disappointment was clear on the faces of the women’s soccer team (2-0) after a 2-0 loss to the Biola Eagles (3-2).

From the opening kickoff, both teams were on the attack. Slowly the tide began to change as the Eagles began to use a one or two touch type of offense.

“Biola was able to connect their passes well in the lane,” said coach Wendy Zwissler.

With 20:49 left in the first half, a pass got through to Jamie Fiktarz of Biola, and she blasted the ball into the net. This was the first of her two goals for the game. Her second goal came just a few minutes after.

Goalkeeper Kim Schrepfer of La Verne had a few diving saves, but the second goal managed to squeak out and gave Fiktarz a chance to tap in her second goal.

“Our team has shown many strengths, but today we really showed the ability to move the ball around efficiently,” said Biola head coach Michael Silzer.

At the end of the first half the score was 2-0 Biola. La Verne was able to pick it up in the second half but had few close shots at the net.

“We didn’t play to our teams capability in the first half, but we started connecting more of our passes in the second,” said sophomore Ashley Polan.

La Verne had a few close chances at a goal. One from senior mid-fielder Erica Borbon on a free kick that just missed the top right corner of the goal. Then with 12:40 left in the second half sophomore defender Katrina Ordonez blasted a shot that bounced off the post.

“We have a young and eager team this year,” said Zwissler. “They have shown great strength and have really worked well together.”

The Leopards (2-1) faced Chapman (2-1) Monday, and after two overtimes the game ended in a 1-1 tie.
