Tigers triumph over Leopards, 7-2

With a new coach and a crop of new, young players, the women’s tennis team is looking forward to a season that will bring it closer as a team and make the program stronger.

“We’re just taking it one match at a time,” said sophomore Tracy MacArthur.

Returning this year are MacArthur and seniors Tiffany Hall and Catherine Padilla. Playing for the first time are sophomore Pauline Duran and juniors Emily Judd, Tracy Huigens and Sandy Thay.

The team has set one main goal for itself this season.

“We’re shooting for fourth place in the conference,” said head coach Erin Hendricks. This is Hendricks’ first year as coach for La Verne.

Last Saturday, the team took on Azusa Pacific and lost, 7-2. Hall defeated Tressa Nordin (6-4, 6-2) and Huigens defeated Marie Torres (6-4, 7-6). MacArthur lost to Michelle Solt (6-3, 6-1), Padilla lost to Izzy Bolles (4-6, 6-0, 6-1), Judd lost to Lisa Andres (6-3, 6-2) and Duran lost to Rosalyn Rodriguez (6-2, 6-0).

In the doubles matches Hall/Judd lost to Tressa Nordin/Carrie Nordin (6-2, 6-0), MacArthur/Padilla lost to Joy/Hartley (7-6, 6-2) and Huigens/Duran lost to Kristen Barne/Jeanee Corum (6-0, 6-0).

“We lost all three doubles matches with Azusa, so we’re going to work on that,” said Hendricks on the team’s match against the Cal Lutheran Regals at 2 p.m. today.

“We’re going to try and put it all together this week,” she said earlier in the week.

The Leopards started their season Jan. 28 against Southern California College and lost, 9-0. Their first match against Caltech on Jan. 25 was rained out.

The team finished their season in seventh place in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) last year.

“The thing that affected us most this year is a new coach and more players,” said MacArthur.

With only three returners, the team is rebuilding. “They’re getting a lot of instruction and they’re doing well,” said Hendricks.
