The sound of a large explosion heard on the University of La Verne campus has been traced to the neighboring La Verne Police Department.
At approximately 7 p.m. Wednesday night, an explosion took place in what LVPD termed a “control blast.”
Radio and Television Assistant Shane Rodrigues, who was at the scene at the time of the explosion said the sound was short, quick and loud.
“I think I heard a warning from the walkie-talkie [of the officer] right before it went off,” said Rodrigues.
According to Rodrigues a sheriff’s truck and a bomb squad vehicle were also at the scene.
LVPD confirmed that the Los Angeles County Bomb Squad was present at that time.
When explaining the action of officers prior to the explosion Rodrigues said “They seemed very serious in that they were trying to clear the area.”
The area around the LVPD building was roped off and secured by officers to keep citizens away from the area.
According to Rodrigues several officers were at the scene. He also believes he saw a robot, which he believes could have been used in setting off the blast.
LVPD could not give any other information on the explosion due to it still being under investigation. The case will further be forwarded to the detective’s bureau.
