Student finds dorm room vandalized

Surprise and devastation struck a University of La Verne student who came back to a ransacked room in the Oaks Residence Hall Oct. 17.

Upon leaving the room, senior Tamara Lien said the room was clean, with desk and dresser drawers shut.

“When I arrived back from class, I walked in my room as I normally would, thinking everything’s fine,” said Lien, who is a four-year resident of the Oaks. “The first thing I noticed was all of my drawers were open in my desk and my top drawer in my dresser. Also my belongings were scattered on my desk and dresser.”

The room is suspected to have been broken into between 9 and 11 a.m. Another clue came from Lien’s watch, which was smashed in the incident.

“We believe it happened at 10:15, due to my watch stopping at the time it was smashed,” said Lien.

Though Lien has a roommate, only her possessions were disturbed, although nothing was stolen. Lien is suspicious of who the intruder may be, but is not releasing names. She says a similar incident occurred with another Oaks resident.

There are no signs of forced entry in the incident. Lien believes the intruder had a key and has almost ruled out the possibility that he entered with a credit card, because she said her door was jammed previous to the break-in, making this almost impossible.

“I am almost positive that the intruder entered the room with a key,” said Lien, who suggests to other Oaks residents to keep dead bolts locked and to stop propping doors on the outside.

Director of Public Safety and Transportation John Lentz was unavailable for comment on the incident.

“I feel unsafe and I have to sleep with one eye open at night because I am scared to sleep in my own room. It would be a little different if the intruder did not have a key, but because he does, I have to live in fear and I hope I don’t have to wake up with him in my room,” said Lien.
