Women’s soccer downs Tigers, 4-1

Coach Wendy Zwissler’s answer was to-the-point when asked what the goal of the women’s soccer season was.

“To win the SCIAC championship.”

And with things looking extremely positive for the team after its 9-1 victory over the Whittier Poets on Sept. 13, they suffered a set back after being defeated in a key conference match by Cal Lutheran 3-0 on Saturday.

“It’s going to hurt us, but we can come back. We play them again,” said sophomore Amber Hall.

“It means we’re going to have to win every game here on out,” said Zwissler.

The Leopards then went on to defeat the Occidental Tigers, 4-1, Wednesday, moving their record to 7-2 overall and 2-1 in SCIAC.

The first half of the game ended scoreless, with La Verne definitely taking an upper hand, but not getting the ball in the net. Of their shots on goal, one from freshman Alicia Raygosa that came extremely close and bounced off of the goal post.

“We were kind of disappointed with our first half,” said Hall.

In the second half, the Leopards played more aggressively, scoring four goals and receiving two yellow cards.

“Once we said we had enough, that was it; we started getting more physical and we dominated the game,” said senior Wendy Rockenbaugh.

Junior Ana Delgado scored the first three goals for the Leopards, two of which were assisted by Jacqui Zwissler, and the third assisted by Angel Mejico. Delgado’s final goal was a shot from about 20 yards out as she was falling down.

“We played way better. We picked up the pace,” said Delgado.

Senior Lisa Thomas scored the last goal for La Verne, giving them a four point lead.

Oxy decreased the lead by one with a goal scored late in the game on a penalty kick.

La Verne had a total of 23 shots on goal as opposed to Occidental’s five. They also had four goalie saves in contrast to Oxy’s single save.

Coach Zwissler felt that this was an important game to win, coming off the loss against Cal Lu.

“It showed they had the desire to keep on going,” she said.

After the Cal Lu game, La Verne made some changes.

“We made adjustments in defense,” said Delgado.

Zwissler felt the team played with more teamwork and desire.

“We controlled them instead of them controlling us,” said Hall.

The Leopards play at Pomona-Pitzer tomorrow at 4 p.m.
