Water polo finishes 4th in tourney

Entering into the 1999 SCIAC Men’s Water Polo Championship, hosted by Caltech, the fourth-seeded University of La Verne’s men’s team knew that if it could win its first game, it would finish no worse than fourth in the tournament.

However, their goal was to win more than just the first game, and take a higher place in the tournament then their predicted fourth-place finish.

With a 13-7 defeat of fifth-seeded Pomona-Pitzer in La Vern’s first match Saturday, it appeared that there was a good chance of further victories.

Fred Sicard was the top scorer for the Leopards with five goals.

It was not to be though, as La Verne dropped their next game against top-seeded Redlands, 21-12. Scicard again was La Verne’s high scorer, with another five goals, giving him the tournament scoring lead.

ULV entered Sunday’s third-place game against second-seeded Whittier, and lost 17-11. Sicard scored five more goals in this game, but was unable to lift the Leopards above the deficit. With this loss, La Verne finished fourth overall in the tournament.

The tournament closed out La Verne’s season with a 6-18 overall record.
