Leo’s Den opens amid food, fun

The University of La Verne’s Leo’s Den held its grand opening this Tuesday. The Halloween-themed event offered giveaways, free arcade games and food.

Steve Morgan, president of the University, and ASF president Dana McJunkin each gave their welcoming speeches to faculty and students.

“I want you to know that this is just a preview of the space of the Campus Center,” Morgan said. “I call it the family room.”

Morgan joked that everyone should be able to take their shoes off and put their feet on the coffee table and watch Barbara Walters. He noted that he would want Leo’s Den to remain clean, but also threadbare form student usage.

McJunkin was energized about the event.

“This is really exciting for the students,” McJunkin said. “It was really exciting how in pieces it grew to 40, 50 people.”

Loretta H. Rahmani, dean of student affairs, was also eager about the event.

“(This) celebration is going to continue in all of our hearts throughout the semester,” Rahmani said.

Throughout the day Leo’s Den offered students free treats and plenty of giveaways. The main give away event that interested students was the chance to win a free iPod Nano.

Senior Jessica Nueva, a liberal studies major, looked forward the drawing.

“I’m poor and it’ll be great to have one,” Nueva said.

Sophomore business and marketing major Adam Elmayan also anticipated the drawing.

“It’s always cool to win new stuff,” Elmayan said. “I have a knack for winning things.”

In the afternoon, Leo’s Den had its own “Spooktacular.” A hearse brought two monsters from Knott’s Scary Farm to celebrate the event. These monsters spent a couple of hours scaring students on campus and promoting Knott’s Scary Farm.

CAB sponsored the ULV Fear Factor challenge. Students had to eat sour gummy worms topped with icing with their eyes closed and without using their hands. Junior Nicole Sullivan, a liberal studies major, won the contest and the pair of tickets to Knott’s Scary Farm for Halloween night.

The faculty and staff also had their own hour as part of the grand opening. There was a special drawing just for faculty and staff. They had a chance to win tickets to Six Flags Magic Mountain and Universal Studios.

KULV held their own set of contests at Leo’s Den including a popcorn-eating contest and loudest scream. Students who won received tickets to Scandia Haunted House in Ontario.

Diana Westmyer, manager of Leo’s Den, was satisfied with the Grand opening.

“I’ve been really excited,” Westmyer said. “It’s actually been a really good turn out.”

“The theme goes really well, they did an awesome job,” Nueva said.

Elmayan also enjoyed the grand opening.

“I like this event because of all the free video games, free food and the radio station is out here,” Elmayan said.

The evening concluded with the showing of the movie “The Amityville Horror” and some late-night pizza and karaoke
