Students sing off stress

University of La Verne students relieved stress by singing along to some of their favorite tunes Sept. 27.

Approximately 60 students gathered at Davenport Dining Hall for Karaoke Night.

This is the second time the Campus Activity Board has sponsored the event this year.

The event took place the first time during “Welcome Week” to give new students an opportunity to meet new people at ULV.

“There is always a good turn out,” said Samantha Dauz, a sophomore in the pre-health program and CAB’s special events chair.

Students were exited to sing along to their favorite songs, and it didn’t take long for nearly everyone to sing at least one song on stage.

Everyone joined in when Daira Smith, a sophomore biology major and music minor, sang along to the catchy lyrics of “Build Me Up Buttercup” and those students who didn’t join in the singing, clapped along to the beat.

“I love karaoke,” Smith said. “I love oldies; oldies are the best to sing.”

Students perfectly complemented a country song by line dancing parallel to the stage.

Those who did not want to sing alone joined groups to sing their favorite songs.

Some of the favorite songs included Sir Mix-a-Lot’s “Baby Got Back” and Aqua’s “Barbie Girl.”

“It’s a lot of fun,” said Monique Avila, a junior liberal studies major. “It’s nice to see so many people out there.”

Students had the opportunity to spend time with their friends.

And the combination of music and food made it even better.

“I enjoy it; it’s good times,” Wilson Hawkins, a senior business administration major, said. “I haven’t been on campus much so it’s nice to be out and about.”

CAB will be hosting the event the third Wednesday of each month to give students the opportunity to take a break and enjoy some food and sing.

“During the week people are stressed out and this is a nice way to chill and sing,” Dauz said.
