Phi Delta Theta recognizes Poore

University of La Verne senior Justin “Golfee” Poore is the 2001- 2002 recipient of the James P. Devere award.

The award is sponsored by the Phi Delta Theta Educational Foundation and is awarded to an undergraduate student.

Phi Delta Theta members are nominated by their college chapters.

The foundation chooses individuals who exemplify a strong commitment to leadership and academic excellence.

“Its nice to have your work recognized, it’s a nice thank you,” said Poore.

Poore has been a member of Phi Delta Theta for three and half years. He currently serves as treasurer, and has held that position for two and half years.

He also attended Phi Delta Theta’s Presidents Leadership Conference in St. Louis in January 2000.

Poore is a member of the ULV golf team, hence his nickname. He was named Iota Delta sorority’s 1999- 2000 Man of the Year.

In addition, he was the Inter-fraternity Council’s treasurer twice.

He has participated in cancer walks, volunteered at the Emanuel Health Care Center and was the lead organizer for the San Marino Community Band.

Justin has also been a member of the Covina Concert Band, which holds concert sessions in the summer.

He shares his musical talents by teaching the trumpet to three students, one of whom is Professor Jonathan Reed’s child.

“You help build music, its nice to watch progress in the students,” Poore said.

Last semester Poore was hired as the assistant band director, and he recently went to Disneyland to play.

As an accounting major, Poore is a member of the ULV Society of Accountants and is currently their webmaster.

Poore plans on graduating this May. He would like to go into insurance adjusting or corporate accounting. Eventually he wants to teach high school math.

“He’s a hard working guy, he’s very dedicated,” said Shane Halderman, president of Phi Delta Theta. “He has put a lot of his time into the fraternity, and he is well liked by the guys.”

This year, the Phi Delta Theta Educational Foundation awarded 47 undergraduate scholarships and 15 graduate fellowships a total of $167,375.

This scholarship program began in 1954. Since then the foundation has awarded over $1.7 million to 1,103 outstanding graduate and undergraduate students.

Scholarship recipients must excel in academics, campus activities, fraternity involvement and community service.

Phi Delta Theta was founded in 1848 on the campus of Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. There are currently 167 Phi Delta Theta chapters on campuses across North America and more than 152,000 alumni.
