Skovron leads ULV to No. 2 finish

Despite a par-breaking performance by the University of Redlands in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament Wednesday, the University of La Verne golf team managed to secure a second-place finish in the conference and a berth in the national tournament.

“I was really happy with how we played,” head coach Rex Huigens said. “We could have played better, but we certainly could have played worse.”

On the two courses at Los Serranos Country Club that hold pars of 74 and 72, Redlands fired a one-under par team score of 583, 11 strokes better than La Verne’s team total of 594.

“I give credit to Redlands,” Huigens said. “They played outstanding.”

With its finish Wednesday, ULV secured a bid in the national tournament, May 12-16 in Columbus, Ohio.

To earn the bid, the Leopards were fighting to be deemed one of the top four schools in the district, which includes Texas, California, Washington and Oregon.

ULV’s top finisher in the tournament, junior Joe Skovron, who plays No. 1 for the Leopards, fired 73-72-145 to earn the third-place individual honor.

Along with freshman James Pearce, and sophomore Andrew Garcia, Skovron was awarded First-Team All-Conference honors.

Adding to Skovron’s list of accolades was this year’s Jess Clarke Award, which is given to the best golfer in the conference, as voted by the SCIAC men’s golf participants.

With his one-under par individual total Wednesday, Skovron also earned the lowest conference scoring average.

Freshman Doug Green, who finished second for ULV Wednesday with rounds of 72 and 77, and junior Joey Murray were awarded Second-Team All- Conference, giving the Leopards a total of five spots on the first and second all-conference teams.

“It was good to see Doug play well,” Huigens said.

ULV’s trip to the national tournament this year is the Leopards’ third in a row.

“We have good momentum coming off (Wednesday’s) tournament,” Green said. “We have a lot of potential to place really high.”

The Leopards, Green added, are hoping for a top-10 finish.
