With tying and go-ahead runs on base, the University of La Verne baseball team lost a 10-5 decision to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps when the game was called short because of darkness.

A.J. Reyes was up to bat with runners on first and third and saw one pitch before the sun gave out.

ULV’s loss in the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader decided the three-game series that began Friday night at Ben Hines field with a 3-1 defeat for the Leopards.

The team started fresh Saturday with a multi-car caravan of players, family and friends as they left the ULV parking lot and headed toward Claremont.

The team had its colors flying high, ready to show its opponents the ferocity of Leopard pride.

In the first of two games, they came out in full force, taking game one 16-7.

“Our offense showed potential,” catcher Todd Farrell said.

The second game had a slow start, with ULV trailing the entire game. Head coach Scott Winterburn said that some of the problems were due to poor defense.

ULV was down 10-5 before rebounding for two big innings with a home run and a base hit.

The team was unable to turn things around before the game was called at the top of the eighth inning.

Although the game was called at 10-9, ULV’s additional four runs were discounted because the inning was incomplete, making the final score 10-5.

ULV lost the series 2-1 and is now 3-3 this season.

Junior pitcher Scott Lindeen and junior outfielder Daniel Soriano were key players in the weekend’s games.

Winterburn said that it is too early to tell what the season holds. But he said the team has “good guys who work well.”

“The team has good catchers, good pitchers and a strong 10. There are good starters, but we are still looking for a third starter,” Winterburn said.

“The team looks good,” senior Ray Podesta said. “We have some big hitters.”

As for Saturday’s second game, “we were starting to pull through and get it done,” Podesta said.

He felt that ULV had potential to at least tie the score in the second game on Saturday.

“It was the manner in which they called the game. It was called after one pitch had been thrown,” Farrell said.

Despite the outcome of last weekend’s games, the team is focused and getting ready for this weekend when ULV plays the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens at 11 a.m. tomorrow on Ben Hines field.
