The Associated Students Federation (ASF) Forum will hold the first AIDS Charity Dance-A-Thon on Friday, April 7 in the Old Gym from 8 p.m. to midnight.
Sign ups have been held from March 20 and will continue until April 5 at the Seal from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
There have been about 12 people who have signed up to date, but ASF hopes that more students will sign up as well.
In order to get more students to participate in the Dance-A-Thon, ASF has contacted the club presidents of organizations on campus in the hopes that they can get more students to participate in the event.
“This is something that the University of La Verne should have. AIDS is one of society’s leading epidemics,” said senior Araceli Esparza, who is co-chair for the event. “It’s something that we can’t really relate to unless it is happening to us or to someone we know.”
Donations from the dance participants are unlimited.
The proceeds gathered from the dance will be donated to the Foothill AIDS Project, located in the city of Claremont.
The money will go into research to find a cure for the AIDS virus.
Also, the Forum is asking local businesses to donate prizes that will be given out to the participants at the end of the dance.
Prizes will be given out to the participants who have danced the longest and participants who have raised the most money; however, that depends on the availability of prizes that ASF can get to distribute. There will possibly be a raffle, again depending on the prizes that are available.
The event itself will consist of the participants coming into the dance. At this time, participants will turn in all their donated money. ASF members will be monitoring the hours that each participant has completed that night.
Participants will be given a five-minute break each hour in order to rest and get energized to dance. The hourly breaks will be extended longer as the end of the dance is reached.
For more information about the Dance-A-Thon, students should contact the ASF office at ext. 4677 and ask for Araceli Esparza or Crystal Apilado.
