ULV continues undefeated play

The University of La Verne women’s volleyball team continued to dominate with a victory over Occidental College Tuesday night, extending their record to an unblemished 15-0, and earning a second place ranking in the West Region in Division III play.

Occidental, ranked 8th in the West Region, got off to good start with a 15-11 victory in the first set, but the Leopards quickly bounced back, defeating their opponent in the next three sets 15-4, 15-1, and 15-4. Senior Amy Brummel and Kelsey Kennedy contributed with 11 kills each.

“Were learning to get intensity started early,” said coach Don Flora on the team’s slow start. “We’re learning how to become great.”

The Leopards had no problem staying intense on Monday, as they defeated Whittier on the road 15-7, 15-10, and 15-11 in three sets. Brummel, had 15 kills and Stacey Lupu had 11 in the overpowering attack. The team compiled 50 kills.

Hosting Penn State-Behrend Saturday, the Leopards earned another victory taking the match in four sets. La Verne got off to a good start in this match with a 15-8 victory in the first set, but PSB answered back, defeating the Leopards 15-12 in their second set. La Verne responded to the challenge overwhelming PSB 15-3, 15-5 in the two last sets of the match. Brummel contributed with 10 kills and Kennedy had 7.

In last Friday’s match, the Leopards were surprised as the University of Redlands came out strong on their home turf, defeating La Verne in the first set, 15-9. The Leopards quickly retaliated though, pouncing on the Bulldogs in the next three sets, 15-3, 15-5, and 15-11. Lupu had an outstanding performance, recording 11 kills and 9 digs on defense.

Coach Flora credits the team’s ability to step up, as well as their pursuit for excellence during every game, for the teams continuing success.

“We have the desire to train and practice to better ourselves. This is a trait championship teams have,” said Flora.

With each game placing La Verne closer to a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship and a spot in the playoffs, returning SCIAC player of the year Brummel acknowledged the team’s potential.

“We go as far as we take ourselves. In the last four years of playing here this is the strongest team I’ve been on,” she said.

The team continues on their run for perfection visiting Claremont tonight at 7:30.
