University of La Verne graduate students are seeing changes in the Master of Science in Leadership Management (MSLM) Program.
The move of the program became official for the spring semester this year. Graduate students are now offered three new courses, one for each term, that will bring the “real world” to the students.
Dr. Bill Cook, vice president of academic affairs, said, “The move of the degree program out of Organizational Management to the School of Education was done in good measure, because the school has a good emphasis on leadership management.”
The spring term offers a Building Partnerships: Creating Coalitions course, which will emphasize the development of rapport with co-workers and management colleagues.
The Program Planning and Evaluation course, offered in the summer term, and the Managing Resources in the Nonprofit Sector course, offered in the fall term, concentrate on social sector organizations.
The course content and program will be determined by the instructor in alliance with Nancy Frank, marketing associate of the program, and Carol Sawyer, program chair.
Each course will be taught by an experienced professional who will facilitate students in applying for the new classes. These classes will help with the MSLM program’s new concentration in non-profit management, or the existing emphasis areas of organizational development, human resource management, or strategic management.
Dr. Cook said that the courses are primarily for “students in managerial positions looking for advancement.”
According to a pamphlet provided by the department, the “course content will be of value to anyone who works or volunteers in a social sector or public sector organizations.”
A memo was sent out to inform the ULV community off the changes.
In the memo Dr. Cook said, “With this move, the University of La Verne’s doctoral leadership and master’s level leadership program are together, creating an enhanced image and role for ULV in this essential aspect of academic and professional growth.”
