University of La Verne sophomore Amy Kratochvil has been named Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Athlete of the Year for the 2002 season after her performance for the ULV women’s volleyball team.
This year, Kratochvil helped lead the Leopards to a perfect 14-0 conference record and a third straight SCIAC title.
Last season, Kratochvil was awarded 2001 West Region Freshman of the Year along with a spot in Sports Illustrated’s Faces in the Crowd after her contribution to the National Champion Leopard squad.
Early this year, Kratochvil continued her dominating ways as she was honored with the first Female SCIAC Athlete of the Week award of the season on Sept. 10.
Kratochvil leads the Leopards in both kills and digs this season. So far this year, Kratochvil has accumulated 263 kills for a hitting percentage of .246 and an average of 3.21 per game. Her defensive prowess also beamed as she has tallied 350 digs for an average of 4.27 per game.
Kratochvil, a 5-foot-9-inch sophomore from Arcadia, follows in the footsteps of ULV volleyball alumna Ryan Winn.
Last season, Winn was awarded SCIAC Athlete of the Year on ULV’s march to the National Championship in Whitewater, Wisc.
This weekend the women’s volleyball team is in Spokane, Wash., at Whitworth College for the West Region Tournament.
ULV must play regional-rival Cal State Hayward to make it out of the regional playoffs and into the National Tournament.
Hayward is No. 1 in the nation and has defeated the Leopards twice this season in as many contests by scores of 3-0 and 3-2.
The Leopards faced off against St. Joseph’s College yesterday and will face Whitworth on the Pirates’ home court tonight.
A victory tonight will send the Leopards to the Regional Championship.
