Spooktacular event sweetens Halloween night

Children from the La Verne community enjoyed trick or treating on the University of La Verne campus on Halloween night during Spooktacular.

The Residence Hall Association and Housing and Residential Life hosted the event that allowed children from the community to trick or treat inside of the Studebaker-Hanawalt Residence Hall.

ULV Housing promoted the event in the elementary schools throughout La Verne.

The residents of Stu-Han had the opportunity to interact with the La Verne community as they gave out candy to trick or treaters for two hours on Halloween night.

About 200 children were able to walk through the building dressed in their costumes collecting candy.

“I liked the fact that the La Verne community came out in support of housing and residential life,” Uvette Vernon, Stu-Han resident assistant, said.

Vernon also said that she liked that the residents of Stu-Han got to meet the La Verne Community.

When the lights were out and the children began to arrive the building looked spooky to anyone.

About 13 students’ rooms were open for trick-or-treaters to pass by the different hallways and rooms while collecting candy.

Also, some students sat at the foot of the stairs to give out candy to the children.

RHA collected candy donations for the event from students.

ASULV and other on campus clubs and organizations donated candy as well.

The members of RHA also volunteered with the decorating of the halls.

The residence hall was decorated by many students.

The students spent all afternoon on Friday and Saturday morning decorating for the event.

Students made posters and decorated the walls. They hung spider webs and other Halloween items to get the building ready for the Halloween celebration.

“It was something that can bring most of the building together,” Araceli Sanchez, Stu-Han program adviser, said.

Trick or treating in one location helps children stay safe, Breanna Edwards, freshman Stu-Han resident said.

The event was brought back after being cancelled last year.

A year ago the residence hall not allowed to hold the event because the building had just been remodeled.

The Halloween event also featured a pumpkin carving contest by the residents of ULV but the pumpkins were scored by the children.

The children were allowed to vote for their favorite carved pumpkin.
