Students look forward to holidays

Whether going home or traveling during the holiday break, University of La Verne students are looking forward to a stress-free period of relaxation and excitement.

Sophomore Lauren Kirk is eager for the last day of class, as she will be leaving to New York with her family on Dec. 19.

While there, Kirk has plans to go to Central Park to see the Christmas lights and go ice-skating.

“I’m excited. I’ll have a white Christmas,” Kirk said.

She said the trip to New York was a last minute decision, and she will only be staying for two or three days.

She will then go to Michigan to spend the holidays with the rest of her family.

“We will have a big dinner and open the presents one by one,” she said. “It’s like a marathon to open the presents; it takes like four hours.”

Kirk will come back to La Verne on New Year’s Eve and is not sure about her plans for that day.

“I’ll probably camp out in Pasadena to go see the Rose Parade,” she said.

Since Kirk does not see her entire family every year, she said she is looking forward to going to Michigan.

“All my family lives far away,” she said. “I’m even more excited to go this year to see my cousin who was just born last month.”

While Kirk will be going back home to spend the holidays with her family, it will not be the same for junior international student Carlos Palermo.

Palermo will also be going to New York but will be spending the holidays with a close friend from Argentina.

“I bought a very cheap ticket,” he said. ‘I want to see my friend and travel.”

Palermo will be staying in New York for one month and will not be attending January Interterm.

“There’s nothing to do here,” he said. “I like to spend New Year’s with my friends.”

Last year, Palermo spent the holidays with his family in Ecuador and Argentina.

“In Argentina, it’s not too religious,” he said.

“In Ecuador, there is usually a big party and everybody is happy,” he added.

Though Palermo will not be with his family this year, he is looking forward to spending time with his friend and experiencing the lively atmosphere of New York.

“I want to see the different theater acts and see Broadway plays,” he said.

For sophomore Carlos Figueroa, his top reason for anticipating Christmas break is to get more sleep.

“In a way, you get to relieve stress from school and you get to be lazier,” he said.

Currently, Figueroa does not have any plans for the holidays but will do something different this Christmas.

“I might actually look forward to giving presents this year,” he said.

“I have never given presents, but this year it might be a little different,” he said.
