Men’s soccer slips by Occidental

The University of La Verne men’s soccer team came up early in its game Wednesday night and kept Occidental College from recovering, defeating the Tigers, 1-0, at Ben Hines Field.

La Verne outshot Occidental, 17-15, and kept its penalties to a limited two.

Play began with a penalty by ULV sophomore Steven Lane in the 48th minute of the game, but he quickly recovered by scoring ULV’s first and only goal of the game five minutes later.

“I have to give all the credit to my little bro Steven Lane,” said ULV junior Ben DeAyora when asked about the game.

Midway through the first half a second penalty was called against La Verne, giving Occidental a second attempt to score, but they were unsuccessful.

ULV freshman Francisco Escobedo was extremely aggressive through the entire game stealing the ball and racing across the field.

“They’re a physical team, aggressive team, dirty team,” said assistant coach Max Gebhardt.

Occidental definitely was an aggressive team that was not only pushing and bad mouthing the Leopards, but also the fans.

The Leopards entered the second half strong and ready to finish off the game, but almost immediately, ULV senior Chet Jusakul was yellow carded and removed from the game. The team continued to play excellent defense and offense. In the 23rd minute of the game La Verne attempted a shot that bounced off the top bar of the goal and bouncing right back out with no goal.

The game was coming to end with no injuries, with only 12 minutes left in the second half when junior Edgar Manzo was knocked to the ground and later escorted off of the field.

“It was a hard fought game, really physical, but we pulled out on top,” Lane said.

The team is now 2-2 in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference following the win over Occidental and a 7-0 loss to the University of Redlands Saturday in La Verne.

The Bulldogs outshot ULV, 15-7, committing only four fouls while the Leopards recorded 17.

Redlands took a 3-0 halftime lead and increased it to 7-0 with four goals in the second half.

“Coming in, got a couple of games where we were off track and now we’re back on track,” Gebhardt said. “We’re getting to the level now where we need to be top three in conference and that was our goal in the beginning, so with that said its these games like Whittier, Cal Tech, and Occidental that we expect to win and are must wins.”
