Betty Wilson, ULV alumnus, dies at 88

Betty Wilson, the wife of former Trustee Emeritus Elvin K. Wilson, died Saturday of natural causes. She was 88.

The Wilsons both attended the University of La Verne in the 1930s. Betty graduated in 1935.

In a statement released in an email, President Stephen Morgan said Betty and Elvin “supported their alma mater with dedication and generosity.”

“We will miss Betty’s wise counsel and encouragement,” Morgan said. “Betty and Elvin epitomized the spirit of the mission of the University of La Verne.”

The Wilsons were the individuals mainly responsible for the building of the Wilson Library. Because of them, students and faculty will benefit from their contributions to ULV.

A celebration of Betty’s life is scheduled for April 23 at 1:30 p.m. in the Maury Smeltzer Lounge at Hillcrest.

Instead of flowers, donations can be made to the Elvin and Betty Wilson Endowment Fund, c/o Bob Earhart, associate vice president for university relations at ULV.

The Wilson’s participated in major initiatives and encouraged progress during their years associated with ULV.

According to Marlin Heckman, head librarian of Wilson Library, the Wilsons were very proud of the library and the fact that it was named after them.

“La Verne was very special to them” said Heckman. “They were always proud to bring guests here.”
